HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Officials at Hartford Hospital say former Hartford Mayor Mike Peters is recovering after liver transplant surgery.
The 59-year-old Peters was diagnosed in the spring with cirrhosis of the liver.
Dr. Matthew Brown, one of those who performed the surgery, says it was complicated by scar tissue around the former mayor's diseased liver. But he says the seven-hour surgery was a success and Peters was responding to doctors Tuesday afternoon.
Peters, a former firefighter, served as mayor from 1993 to 2001.
He was listed in critical but stable condition Tuesday evening.
