A DAY UNLIKE ANY OTHER
|
GLENDALE AZ.- Needless to say, no one expected this type of day when our heads hit the pillow last night in Arizona. It was turned upside down by the Yahoo Sports report about alleged recruiting violations in the UConn men's program surrounding the recruitment of Nate Miles.
From the time the story broke around 10 eastern until late at nght, it is all that anyone who covers the program talked about. Phone rang off the hook, media members talked amongst themselves before and long after Jim Calhoun's press conference.
The coach wasn't going to say much about the story, no one expected him too. And make no mistake, this story isn't about to go away anytime soon. Certainly the timing was interesting, Yahoo using this day before the Sweet 16 to get the maximum publicity. I have lots of thoughts about that, about the writers who did the story, about air heads like the CBS Sportsline rocket scientist who used this story to take a pointless shot at electronic media people " TV and radio heads aren't too skilled in giving you the big picture when it comes to a man's reputation " (really, Dick Enberg or Jay Bilas isn't skilled enough)
But I'll save that for another day". On tap Thursday at the amazing University of Phoenix Stadium, UConn and Purdue in the Sweet 16. .The Boilermakers ca shoot the three, play sticky defense and have won five straight.JaJuan Jackson is one of the most improved big men in the country, E'Twan Moore can play for anybody and Robbie Hummel and Chris Kramer are the type of players that coaches love.
They will provide more of a challenge than Chattanooga and Texas A&M. But can they keep UConn from an Elite Eight duel with Memphis or Missouri. We'll know by 9:30 on Thursday night.
6:30 pre game for Wayne and me on Thursday night. I hope you can join us and then contribute your opinions on Husky Talk immediately following the game.
