Bridge Repairs Prompt Delays on Hartford Highway

Emergency repairs are causing miles of backups on I-84 Eastbound in Hartford this afternoon. State Department of Transportation spokesperson Judd Everhardt says the work focuses on plates that cover the gaps between sections of the elevated highway.
Traffic eastbound slowed through the afternoon,  and within about two hours,   the backup extended to exit 39-A in Farmington.
Crews will be picking up and clearing the scene by about 4:30 this afternoon,  with more permanent repairs to be conducted overnight.  But residual backups will likely continue through the rush hour.
WTIC's Mike Alan,  flying WTIC's Air One suggests that drivers take Route 9 south to Cromwell,  north on Interstate 91,  a detour which may seem lengthy,  but which should save time.  Mike says the Corbin's Corner ramp was backed onto the highway,  with traffic trying to exit,  to turn onto New Britain Ave. in West Hartford,  and the South Main exit was also jammed.   (Photo from State DOT Traffic Camera.)
