For its 100th birthday. Hartford's Bulkeley Bridge marks the occasion with multi-colored LED lights instead of candles. The energy-efficient lights will outline the bridge's arches through the month of October.
The first to see the lighting were attendees at Riverfront Recapture's "Big Mo'' fundraiser Thursday night. Each year Riverfront Recapture selects a place near the river to celebrate "Big Mo," choosing a place that celebrates the energy and vitality of the region.
The bridge, completed in 1908, cost three years to construct, at a cost of $3 million. Most of the granite came from the Stony Creek and Leete Island quarries in Branford, and care was taken in construction of the arches to choose each granite block to compliment the adjoining blocks.
The Bulkeley Bridge, named for Morgan G. Bulkeley, is on the National Register of Historic Places. This lighting is the first in 100 years.
