HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gay and lesbian couples are marking the one-year anniversary of the day Connecticut began allowing same-sex marriages.
More than 150 people turned out for the celebration Thursday on the steps of the state Capitol. Some toasted with glasses of sparkling cider.
The Department of Public Health says there were 2,291 same-sex marriages filed with the office between Nov. 12, 2008 and Aug. 31, 2009. More than half were out-of-state couples.
Recent votes in California and Maine have shot down gay marriage rights. But advocates say they're hopeful the federal Defense of Marriage Act will eventually be repealed and same-sex couples across the country can marry.
Opponents say the recent Maine vote shows New Englanders don't support gay marriage. Same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa.
