DOT: Emergency Repairs Need For New Haven Bridge
|
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - The state Department of Transportation has ordered that repair work begin on the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge spanning the Quinnipiac River in New Haven.
The DOT says the Interstate 95 span, popularly know as the Q bridge, has deteriorated to the point that repairs must start soon to keep it from becoming a safety hazard.
DOT officials say the bridge is in no danger of failing, but its condition was rated ``critical'' in its most recent inspection.
Transportation Commissioner Joseph Marie says that immediate attention needs to be given to repairs to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
The emergency declaration allows the hiring of a contractor without going through the bidding process.
