SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (AP) - Good intentions aren't good enough for some Southington people who have been trying to donate produce from their gardens to a group that feeds the needy.
Health officials say that vegetables from home gardens can't be given to the organization, Bread for Life.
Health Department Director Charles Motes says Bread for Life is a licensed establishment similar to any restaurant, meaning it's governed by the same regulations that cover restaurants.
Bread for Life can only obtain food from approved sources, such as grocery stores, vendors or truck farmers.
Motes says the food served has to be acceptable to the local board of health and someone's backyard garden is not an approved source. The aim is to avoid unknown health problems.
