GAME ON

THE DAY BEFORE THE OPENER...aka RANDY EDSALL'S 50TH BIRTHDAY... Yes, the head coach of the Huskies hits the big 5-0 today (Wednesday). As he said last night, he probably hasn't celebrated a birthday since he was 12 since that darn football thing kept getting in the way... And it will again Thursday night with the season opener against Hofstra.
Much of the media talk (myself included) has been about last year's Appalachian State upset of powerful Michigan on opening day. The UConn players told us they have talked about it but realisticaly, Appalachian State was the best team in FCS (that translates out to 1-AA) and Michigan was a team with issues...Since the 2003 game with Lehigh that ended up 35-17, UConn has been pretty strong against the 1-AA opponents.
Interesting story by our friend Des Connor in the Courant today about ticket sales. UConn doesn't need me to shill tickets for them but a football game at the Rent has been a pretty good time. The tailgating has been solid from Day One and the crowds that show up have been very enthusiastic. There are only 40,000 seats and there really isn't a solid reason why the building isn't sold out for every game. For every person who won't go on a Thursday night, there is at least one or two who would go on a Thursday. I know people aren't happy with ticket prices and donations but I don't think that's the reason the games arent sold out...
More tomorrow. An abbreviated version of the Tailgate show begins @ 530 with Arnold and Kevin, then Bob kicks off the UConn football magazine @ 6.
If you come to the game, bring a transistor... |
