HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The chief medical examiner's office has ruled that a Coventry man charged with murdering his pregnant girlfriend committed suicide in his jail cell.
Forty-three-year-old Alfredo Ferrer was found early Wednesday with a bed sheet tied around his neck at the Garner prison in Newtown.
The medical examiner's office performed an autopsy and ruled his death a suicide by hanging Thursday. Officials say the cause of death was traumatic asphyxia.
The Correction Department and state police are investigating Ferrer's death.
Ferrer was facing a murder charge in the shooting of 27-year-old Amanda Realie in their apartment on April 14. Realie died three days later, and doctors were not able to save the unborn child.
