Jury Selection Delayed in Cheshire Home Invasion Case
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Jury selection will remain on hold for at least another week for a defendant in the 2007 Cheshire home invasion slayings.
The process was halted after Steven Hayes was found unconscious in his prison cell Jan. 30. His attorney Thomas Ullman told a New Haven judge on Monday his client had been suicidal and overdosed on tranquilizers and antipsychotic drugs prescribed for him. Judge Jon Blue postponed jury selection to Feb. 16.
Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky are charged with killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters. Four jurors have been picked for Hayes' trial.
Hayes lawyer said he apparently hoarded and crushed doses of his medication without guards' knowledge, then took it all at once.
Hayes was hospitalized. He has since recovered and is being held in a prison infirmary.
