Lawmakers Debating Gas, Energy Prices Again

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - There's renewed pressure at the state Capitol to tackle high gasoline prices and looming winter heating costs.
Republican lawmakers are collecting signatures to hold a special session this summer to cap the wholesale price of gasoline that's taxed by the state.
Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell also wants lawmakers to return to Hartford to approve spending $22 million in newfound surplus funds to provide emergency heating aid to needy residents this winter.
Democrats, who hold a large majority in the legislature, plan to unveil their own energy proposals later Tuesday. One of the Democratic leaders, Senate President Pro Tem Donald E. Williams Jr., says he agrees with spending surplus funds on winter heating programs.
