Litchfield Officials Compromise on Ribbon Ban

LITCHFIELD, Conn. (AP) - An outcry from supporters of men and women in the U.S. military has prompted officials in a Connecticut town to retreat from a ban on yellow ribbons being tied around trees in honor of America's troops.
The Borough of Litchfield's Board of Warden and Burgesses voted Wednesday night to allow one yellow ribbon to remain on a town green tree and to fly a flag commemorating servicemen and woman on the green.
Most of the crowd of about 100 people at the meeting supported the five yellow ribbons that were adorning trees on the green in support of troops serving overseas.
The warden and burgesses had decided at a previous meeting to ban ribbons of any color from the trees on the green because of aesthetic reasons and potential damage to the trees, a move that made national news.
