VOLUNTOWN, Conn. (AP) - State police say a family swimming outing at Green Falls Ponds in Voluntown has left the father dead and his son in critical condition.
State police say Thomas Girard of Voluntown was pronounced dead at the scene Monday night. His teenage son, Marc Girard, was taken to a Rhode Island hospital and two younger children were taken for evaluation to Backus Hospital in Norwich.
Voluntown Fire Chief Jody Grenier says that Thomas Girard, believed to be in his 40s, got in trouble in the pond and went under water. He says Marc Girard tried to rescue his father, but also became distressed.
State police are investigating the incident along with officers from the state Department of Environmental Protection.
The pond is on the Connecticut/Rhode Island border.
