Serverino Cruz's defense lawyer, Deron Freeman, says his client is going into federal custody, and could be deported to Mexico within two weeks.
The prosecution says Cruz is in the United States illegally.
Earlier in the hearing at Bristol Superior Court, a judge rejected Cruz's request for accelerated rehabilitation.
Cruz was charged with maliciously killing an animal, cruelty to animals, and disorderly conduct. Police say he used a drill to put holes in the head of a dog named Baby, after he learned the animal had bitten his son earlier in the day.
The defense says the son had thirty stitches, as a result of the bite.
Some of the protesters yelled at a car carrying some of Cruz's relatives, as it left court. |
