Police: Repeat Drunk Driver Leads Trooper on High Speed Chase
|
A Derby man who authorities say was arrested six times previously on driving under the influence charges is facing a seventh such charge after allegedly leading a state trooper on a high-speed chase late Friday night on Route 8.
A trooper chased Jermaine Gibson, 34, at speeds of up to 100 miles an hour after he was spotted driving erratically on the highway northbound near Exit 11 in Trumbull, State Police said. "Stop sticks" were deployed at Exit 14 in Shelton, and Gibson crashed his vehicle off Exit 17, near the Derby-Ansonia line, authorities said.
Police say Gibson and his passenger, Philip Anderson, 49, of New Haven fled the accident scene. Both were later apprehended by Ansonia Police.
Gibson was taken to Griffin Hospital with minor injuries, where he failed a field sobriety test, police said. He was subsequently charged with DWI. Gibson's driver's license had been suspended since late 2007, authorities said.
Gibson is due in Derby Superior Court on November 9 on charges of DWI, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and other offenses. Anderson has not been charged by State Police.
