HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Gov. M. Jodi Rell says state prison officials are investigating whether an inmate who died this week after being beaten should have been housed in the same prison as his attacker.
Rell says the Department of Correction is reviewing records to see whether the attacker knew Kevin Cales, who was convicted on manslaughter charges in the deaths of five people in May 2006. His ex-girlfriend and four passengers in her car died after the vehicle crashed in Berlin while being chased at high speeds by a car driven by Cales.
The governor said Friday that if the attacker was related to one of Cales' victims or had a connection to them, the two inmates should not have been housed in the same facility.
Cales, 34, died Tuesday after being beaten inside the McDougall-Walker Correctional Institution. No charges have yet been filed.
