RU- The Day After
|
SUNDAY/MONDAY- Ok, it's actually early Monday morning when I write this after watching Game Four of the World Series (which we will talk about on SportsTalk on Monday Night on WTIC). But I have been thinking about the Rutgers loss quite a bit since games' end.
The Huskies fourth loss of the season was to me at least, the most disappointing. Trailing from the opening kickoff, at one point during the third quarter looking like the energy and emotion has finally been sapped out after the events of the last two weeks, UConn snapped to life. The two touchdowns that eventually put them ahead, the two point conversion that I am firmly convinced was another blown call by the Big East officials (a phrase we seem to use everyweek) and the defensive intensity, all backed by a terrific emotional crowd at the Rent.
And then, in the blink of an eye, or actually 16 seconds, the air is let out of the balloon. Tim Brown catches a pass in space, and then amazingly finds more space until he sprints 81 yards to the endzone for the winning score with 22 seconds play. What would have been an amazing emotion win is turned into a gut wrenching emotional loss.
But that's what sports, and especially football, is all about. One play can turn emotions like a faucet.
UConn will now spend the rest of the season without Cody Endres who underwent shoulder surgery on Sunday after being injured in the first quarter against RU. Too bad, he is a great kid and had really taken over the quarterback role.
But now, it's Zach Frazier's chance to shine. And after shaking off the cobwebs from six weeks of inactivity, Frazier played a terrific 4th quarter on Saturday. He has the quarterback job back after losing it when he was injured against North Carolina, now Zach has a chance to put his stamp on the job.
Another huge loss is Robbie Frey, also done for the season with a shoulder surgery. The Pennsylvania native had turned into a special teams demon and his 100 yard kickoff return Saturday was one of the highlights of the season.
But on a positive note, there was the return of Scott Lutrus, playing his first full game of the season and playing well. If the defense is to regain its edge, Scott will be right in the middle of it..
I know UConn is 13 points from being 8-0 but that's not how records are kept. They are 4-4 with a chance to make a statement Saturday night against Cincinnati. More on that game during the week.
