HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gov. M. Jodi Rell says she may veto criminal justice legislation because it could be too costly.
The bill, which the General Assembly passed last week, was in response to deadly home invasions in Cheshire and New Britain. It would toughen penalties for violent, repeat offenders and includes $10 million for more prosecutors, probation officers and state police.
Rell says the state is facing fiscal troubles and she does not believe significant new spending is possible.
The state's surplus, as of last week, was down to $15 million. Rell says she guesses it will ultimately drop further, possibly into deficit territory.
