Rockefeller Mansion Sells for Nearly $23M

GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) _ A massive Greenwich mansion that once housed members of the Rockefeller and Carnegie families has sold for nearly $23 million.

The 19,000-square-foot estate had been listed by Leslie McElwreath of Sotheby's International Realty in May for $23.9 million.

The mansion was built in 1929 as a wedding gift for James Stillman Rockefeller, grandnephew of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller after he married Nancy Carnegie, a grandniece of steel magnate Andrew Carnegie.

Rockefeller lived at the estate until his death in 2004 at the age of 102.

McElwreath says the seller, who bought the house in 2007 for $13.4 million, did an extensive renovation.

McElwreath said Monday the new owners like that fact that the 11 acre property is close to downtown.
