SIGNING DAY
|
WEDNESDAY- As I listened to unlikely sources go on and on about National Letter of Intent Day, I began to wonder when did this become such a big deal.
Obviously the arrival on the scene of ESPNU and CBS College Sports has contributed to the frenzy. But the breathless accounts of who is going where and who has the best class is over the top.
How many outlets will look at the classes signed five years ago today to see how they turned out. My guess is for the most part not great. Recruiting is such an inexact science, heightened by the faascination with the recruiting services. Two star, three star, yada yada yada. Come back in four or five years and tell me how the class turned out.
Will all 20 players signed by UConn be "blue chips". Percentages say no. And that's also true at Alabama, Texas, Florida, USC and every BCS school. But today is there day so congratulations on making such an important decision.
