NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)_ A Seymour man given a two-year sentence for slashing the throats of six of his roommate's puppies and killing five of them is being freed from prison.
Brannon Chandler is due to be released Friday, according to a Department of Correction spokesman.
Chandler pleaded guilty in August 2005 to six counts of cruelty to animals for attacking his roommates' pets in Seymour.
Police said Chandler told them he harmed the 6-week-old Labrador retriever mix puppies because his roommates wouldn't let him have a dog.
The surviving puppy, named Amazing Grace by hospital staffers who treated her, spent nearly two weeks in Cheshire Veterinary Hospital before being released to Seymour Animal Control Officer Joe LaRovera.
Chandler, once he is released, will be on probation for three years, during which time he's been ordered to undergo psychiatric and substance abuse evaluation and treatment on an inpatient basis if necessary as well as anger management counseling.
In addition, Chandler is prohibited from owning any animals or making contact with the owner of the puppies he killed.
Chandler spent three years in prison, including the time before his sentencing when he could not post the $50,000 bail.
He was sentenced in October 2005 to five years in prison, suspended after two years served, for six counts of cruelty to animals and an additional year for assault on a peace officer.
In January 2005, Chandler slashed the throats of six Labrador retriever/pointer mix puppies and left them in the woods off Skokorat Street in subfreezing temperatures.
Chandler was transferred twice since being imprisoned in January 2006 and ended up at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown, a high-security facility that offers care and treatment for inmates with significant mental health issues, according to the Correction Department.
