State Education Dept: We Met Sheff Classroom Diversity Goal

The state Education Department says it met a Sheff V. O'Neill goal for the current school year, of having at least 27 percent of Hartford students in racially diverse classrooms.  The number includes students in magnet schools, and students who live in Hartford, who are bused to other towns.

A lawyer representing the Sheff plaintiffs says the information released by the state Education Department leaves them with many questions.  They are trying to get more information from the Department, to determine if the desegregation goal was really met.

The numbers would represent an 8 percent increase in diverse classrooms from last school year, when the goal was 19 percent in Hartford.
