Stinging Jellyfish Move Into Long Island Sound
|
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Swimmers who have headed out into the waters of Long Island Sound to cool off have been greeted by a bumper crop of stinging jellyfish.
State biologist Penny Howell says mid-July is prime time for jellyfish in Long Island Sound, and she's heard reports about jellyfish masses in various spots along the shoreline, including Stratford and Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison.
This has been a generally mild weather year, allowing more jellyfish to survive and thrive in the warmer water.
In recent weeks, swimmers at Fairfield's Jennings Beach reported roughly 30 stings daily. Fairfield keeps spray bottles of white vinegar on hand to deactivate the toxin from jellyfish stings.
