So what to make of the first two deep of the football season, the first depth chart for the opener against Hofstra (it starts at 5-30 with the Tailgate Show on WTIC and WTIC.com)
a)- Wide Receiver- There seems to be a perception that not being listed as a first team receiver is some sort of demotion for D.J. Hernandez. Hardly. He is a slot receiver and in many situations, he'll be on the field at the start of the game when UConn opens in a three wide receiver formation with Ellis Gaulden and Kashif Moore. In a two back, one tight end formation, D.J. won't start...
b)- Offensive line- Mike Hicks won the battle at right tackle over Dan Ryan. Randy Edsall says that Hicks played better. Ryan will be the first tackle sub and the bottom line is the depth is better on the o-line than at any other time in UConn's brief D-I history.
c)- Defensive line- Lots of depth here too! Marcus Campbell could have a huge impact as a back up defensive end, Kendall Reyes has played well since moving insde from defensive end. And when Mike Cox returns and Brandon Dillon gets in better shape, it means there will be 10 people who could see time on the line.
d)- Cornerback- Jasper Howard came in as the 2nd stringer but beat out Reggie Mc Clain. I get the feeling watching Howard, he turn into the 2nd coming of Darius Butler.
e)- Kickoff Returners- Lots of speed with Butler and Robbie Frey. And that spot gets even faster when Jordan Todman returns from his shoulder injury.
Lots of players, lots of players who want to contribute. It should bode well for the Huskies.
The first edition of the Randy Edsall Show is Tuesday night, the 26th @ 6:10 from the video studio at the Burton Family Football Complex. We welcome your phone calls during the second half hour of the show.
