THURSDAY IN ST PETE:
|
9:45 AM- Just finished breakfast with the other two Amigos (Wayne and Kevin) as we begin our first full day in St Pete. It was a relatively easy flight and trip to the airport, and then an enjoyable meal across the street with five of our print colleagues. There is something relaxing about having dinner outdoors, which we did. Then back to the media hotel to solve all the worlds problems with many of the same colleagues. I told the fellows that once I am elected governor, I will have two rules. One, no more selling lottery tickets in convenience stores (it has nothing to do with the actual lotteryt,(just the purchasers of said tickets )and two, there would be two lines for check in thru security at Bradley, one for people who travel a lot and one for people who never travel. Two pet peeves.
There are still some three thousand seats remaining for the two rounds at the 21 thousand seat St Pete Times Forum, which is primarily home of the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL (you remember the NHL, right). To the average fan, these probably appears as two ho-hum pods here but I think there could be interesting matchups. Certainly, Clemson and Villanova is a real good 5-12 matchup in the MidWest Regional. And a potential second round game between UConn and Drake would peak some national interest.
The local papers are full of NCAA stories. The front page of The Tampa Tribune promoted "No Love Lost Between UConn's Star Coaches". Then the column on the front page of the sports section by Joe Henderson was hardly inflamatory and broke no new ground. Do you think this will EVER not be a story.
We head to the arena soon for practices and press conferences. We'll visit later.
Oh yes, 70ish and cloudy in the St Pete-Tampa-Clearwater metroplex. |
