TUESDAY WITH RANDY
|
STORRS: Today seemed like the first normal football day since the Jasper Howard murder. The head coach said as much today with the media. He mentioned the 6:45 meeting and talking to the players, who had to be tired after the emotional trip to Miami for Jazz funeral on Monday.
Give mad props to former Huskies Tyler Lorenzen, Donald Brown, Donald Thomas and Julius Williams for attending the services. Knowing those young men it's no surprise.
Onto the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. They are 0-2 in the Big East, getting slobberknocked in the season opener against Cincinnati then losing to Pittsburgh two weeks ago. Their wins have come against Howard, FIU,Maryland, Texas Southern and Army. Ok, not exactly the gauntlet. But it doesn't mean that Greg Schiano's team can't play.
They are forced 21 turnovers, including 14 fumbles. Defensive end George Johnson, middle linebacker Ryan D'Imperio, and defensive backs Devin McCourty and Joe Lefeged are playmakers.
The offense has been behind the defense. True freshman quarterback Tom Savage will be making his 6th start. Big, good arm but a freshman when it comes to making decisions. Jack Corcoran is the new big running threat, but don't sleep on Kordell Young, who gained 80 yards against the Huskies last season. Wideout Tim Brown is the big threat and will be a match for the Huskies secondary.
So, if it is like the other Rutgers-UConn games, in all likelyhood it will come down to the final minutes.
Here is the first of several requests from me, please, please be in your seats in time for the pre game ceremonies to honor Jasper. It's only right.
And congratulations to our friend, John Silver, who covers UConn football for the Manchester Journal Inquirer. He and his wife Shannon had their second child, John Francis Silver Junior on Monday. There is no truth that John Jr came into the world wearing a Yankees hat!
