NORWALK, Conn. (AP) _ A 19-year-old Maine man who fatally shot himself when police surrounded him on a Connecticut highway Sunday had abducted his ex-girlfriend and killed her male friend earlier in the day, authorities said Monday.
Eric Niles, who lived in Alton, Maine, killed 20-year-old Blake Michaud when he found Michaud and the woman together in her family's home in Bradley, Maine, early Sunday, Maine state police said.
Niles then abducted the woman, 18-year-old Kristin Cates, and fled the state in a pickup truck he had stolen from his grandfather, police said. She had recently broken up with Niles and had obtained a protective order against him.
Niles died early Monday, hours after he shot himself in the head as Connecticut troopers surrounded the pickup truck after a pursuit on I-95 that ended in Norwalk.
Cates, who was in the truck at the time, was not injured and will not face charges, police said Monday. Her parents came to Connecticut to take her home Monday.
Maine authorities say they are classifying the incident as a murder-suicide and domestic violence.
Connecticut authorities plan to perform Niles' autopsy Tuesday, and Michaud's autopsy is scheduled Tuesday in Maine.
