THE SPRING GAME
|
Better late than never , here is MY take on the Blue-White game at Rentschler Field.
I was most impressed by all four running backs. We know what Donald Brown and Andre Dixon can do, we now have an inkling about Robbie Frye and Meme Wylie. Both ran extremely well and showed versatility to their games. It's hard to imagine four backs getting regular work BUT when you take the possibility of injuries into account and the chance to play on special teams, it's not hard to imagine all four having an impact when August roles around.
The first team offensive line played well. We didn't see Mike Hicks but Moe Petrus and Zach Hurd certainly look like they can play.
I thought Zach Frazier played very, very well in the second half. He showed that he is more experienced than Cody Endres and Frazier will be the #2 quarterback when camp begins.
The defense is going to be good. There is depth at the ends, there will be depth inside, the linebacking corps is quicker than ever and there will be battles for two and maybe three spots in the secondary.
Obviously, the wide receiver position will be a source of intrigue when practice begins. Kashif Moore and Kevin Poles will have to fight off the challenge of incoming freshman Michael Smith, Gerrard Sheppard and Brian Parker to win spots on the two deep. It's safe to say that D.J. Hernandez , Brad Kanuch and Ellis Gaulden (if healthy) will be at the top of the depth chart.
The big story to come out of the game was the continuing discussion of the potential series with Notre Dame. The columnists had a field day with the comments by Jeff Hathaway during the game and Randy Edsall afterwards.
I don't think UConn can dictate to Notre Dame where the games should be played. Like it or not, and trust me no one likes having Notre Dame tell them what to do, the Irish can take their ball and go somewhere else if UConn tries to force the Irish into playing games at Rentschler. And that doesn't help the growth of the Connecticut program.
But I do think healthy discussion is important as part of the process. And while I hope the State Legislature doesn't try to pass a bill forcing UConn to play all home games in East Hartford, it is their right to give their opinion on the matter. But at the end of the day, a ten game series with Notre Dame is in the best interest of the UConn football program.
