MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) _ A member of the University of Connecticut track team has been arrested on charges he violated a protective order by trying to buy a shotgun.
Twenty-three-year-old Daniel Hutcherson of Willington was arraigned in Manchester Superior Court on Friday. The judge kept his bond at $500,000 after saying Hutcherson was a danger to society.
Hutcherson was scheduled to graduate this weekend. His lawyer says he had plans to try to make the U.S. Olympic team as a triple jumper.
East Hartford police say Hutcherson tried to buy a Winchester Ranger shotgun at the Cabela's store in their town. He was charged Thursday with criminal attempt to purchase a firearm and violation of a protective order.
Hutcherson is also facing assault and breach of peace charges in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident in Storrs last October.
