Jury selection will remain on hold for at least another week for a defendant in the 2007 Cheshire home invasion slayings.
     The process was halted after Steven Hayes was found unconscious in his prison cell Jan. 30.

The Department of Environmental Protection has issued its weekly ice fishing report for the week beginning Feb. 4.

Mega Millions Lottery Tickets on Sale in Connecticut Today


No need to cross state lines to get the big-jackpot lotto tickets. Dozens of states will begin selling both Mega Millions and Powerball tickets on Sunday, moving the U.S. a step closer to having a national lottery.   Powerball, with drawings on Wednesday and Saturday is already on sale in Connnecticut,.  Now customers in the state will be able to buy Mega Millions tickets,   for drawings on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Chidren's Pendants Recalled Because of Cadmium


Federal consumer safety regulators have announced the recall of ``The Princess and The Frog'' pendants sold at Walmart stores because of high levels of the toxic metal cadmium, an unprecedented action that reflects concerns of an emerging threat in children's jewelry.
    

2 Million Medical Needles Recalled


Federal health officials announced the recall of 2 million medical needles Tuesday because of a risk they can push bits of silicone into patients' bodies. The Food and Drug Administration said Japanese manufacturer Nipro Medical Corp. has voluntarily recalled its Exel/Exelint Huber needles manufactured betweenJanuary 2007 and August 2009.

Police Warn of Scam Targeting Grandparents


State police are warning grandparents of reports in at least four towns recently of  the so-called "grandson scheme" targeting elderly persons.   The scammer pretends the individual's grandson has been arrested and needs money. 

Rebates Available for Energy Efficient Appliance Purchases


 Starting Monday,  and running through at least the end of April,  Connecticut consumers who buy certain energy-efficient appliances will be able to apply for rebates under a Department of Energy program using federal stimulus funds. Rebates for "Energy Star" appliances range from $50 dollars for refrigerators,  freezers or room air conditioners to $500 for centralair conditioning.

CL&P Beacon to Glow Red for Women's Heart Health


Drivers travelling through downtown Hartford or on the Berlin Turnpike may notice something different for the next month.  Through February 24th,  the white lights from the Connecticut Light and Power beacon in Berlin and the Northeast Utilities headquarters building downtown will be red.  The aim is to draw attention to the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" women's heart health program.

Johnson & Johnson Again Expands Recall of Medications


Johnson & Johnson expanded a recall of over-the-counter medications Friday, the second time it has done so in less than a month because of a moldy smell that has made users sick.  The broadening recall now includes some batches of regular and extra-strength Tylenol children's Tylenol, eight-hour Tylenol,Tylenol arthritis, Tylenol PM, children's Motrin, Motrin IB, Benadryl Rolaids, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph's aspirin.

The American Institute of Philanthropy's website has a list of top-rated charities accepting donations for Haitian earthquake relief.

Recall of Play Yard Announced


The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection is alerting consumers to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's voluntary recall of Safety 1st Disney Care Center™ Play Yard and Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yard due to a suffocation hazard.  The portable play yards include a bassinet attachment and a built-in changing station.

Fishing, Hunting Guides Available On-Line


The 2010 editions of the "Connecticut Angler's Guide" and the "Connecticut Hunting and Trapping Guide"   have been issued.   The Department of Environmental Protection says the guides are now available online at the DEP website.  Printed versions won't be distributed until April,   at more than 350 locations statewide.

About 447,000 Dorel baby car seat carriers are being recalled after dozens of reports of the child restraint handle coming loose.

Connecticut Among States Where Tundra Trucks Are Recalled


oyota Motor Corp. will recall 110,000 Tundra trucks from the 2000-2003 model years to address excessive rust on the vehicle's frame. The government urged owners to remove the spare tire from the frame, concerned it could fall onto the road and create a hazard for other vehicles.

Voluntary Recall Announced for a Million Mclaren Strollers


about a million Maclaren strollers sold by Target and Babies ``R'' Us are being recalled after 12 reports of children having their fingertips amputated by a hinge mechanism.   The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the recall includes nine models of Chinese-madesingle and double umbrella Maclaren strollers, which have been sold around the country since 1999.

Company Expands Recall of Highly Flammable Robes


Highly flammable women's robes sold by Blair are now linked to nine deaths, and the company is expanding a recall to include more products imported from the Pakistani manufacturer.     Since June, Blair LLC of Warren, Pa., has received four more reports of deaths linked to the full length women's chenille robes.

Police in Connecticut raided a Bristol business after 55-gallon barrels of hazardous materials were found dumped illegally at several locations in four towns. State police say they expect to make arrests in connection with the dump sites discovered Friday night and Saturday in Bristol, Plymouth, Burlington and Harwinton.
