NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut prison officials say a state inmate who committed suicide in his jail cell was a Coventry man charged with killing his pregnant girlfriend in April.
Authorities say 43-year-old Alfredo Ferrer apparently hanged himself with a bedsheet at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown. They say his cellmate reported the death to correctional officers at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The Correction Department is investigating the incident, and the chief medical examiner's office will be performing an autopsy.
Coventry police say Ferrer shot 27-year-old Amanda Realie in front of their two young children during an argument in their apartment on April 14. Realie died three days later, and doctors were not able to save the unborn child.
