Four games in four days on the UConn Radio Network. I will let my friend Bob Joyce give you the lowdown on the womens' opener. Here are some quick thoughts on the three games I broadcast.
TAMING THE CATAMOUNTS - Real solid effort by the big people and Jerome Dyson. If Dyson can play at that level 85-90% of the time, then the Huskies have the chance to be good...real good... Thabeet and Adrien were dominant against a team they should dominate against. All in all, a good way to start the season
SATURDAY IN SYRACUSE- After a late night drive to the 'Cuse, it's football. UConn got back to its roots against the Orange, running the football. "The" Donald Brown and Jordan Todman were outstanding, thanks as usual to strong blocking by the O-line, tight ends Martin Bedard and Dan Ryan (nice shoes Dan!) and fullbacks Anthony Sherman and Anthony Davis. The defense was dominant except for the one Syracuse touchdown drive. And the special teams gave up 7 points but scored 9... Tyler Lorenzen did what he does best, manage the game. His return had a positive effect on all the Huskies.
AN X-L MONDAY- For 25 minutes, Hartford played its' game. Dan Lebovitz team scrapped and scrapped and trailed by one early in the second half and by two with just under 15 minutes to play. Then, UConn exploded...a 50-9 run... It's as dominant a stretch as the Huskies have had in a long, long time. Craig Austrie , Kemba Walker, Jerome Dyson and Donnell Beverly all played well. Jeff Adrien dominated the glass although he and Hasheem Thabeet had quiet games offensively. They can't do that when the conference season begins.
Donyell and Donny Marshall were both there, Donyell's daughter goes to UConn and is a cheerleader.
A quick aside about Hartford. I have had a chance to talk to Dan Lebovitz several times on SportsTalk but never had a chance to meet him in person or watch his team play until tonite. I walked away very impressed. He's as good a guy in person as he is on the phone and his kids play really really hard.
And congrats to one of the good guys on the beat, Chuck Banning of the New London Day for initially getting the story about Randy Edsall's lack of interest in the Syracuse football head coaching job.
