THE MARATHON
|
We are well into our Seven Games in Six Days Marathon on WTIC. Last night, a tough win for the Men in the Virgin Islands. First off, good job by Wayno and Phil Chardis on the broadcast. It's not the first time that "Chards" has been behind the mike and it showed. He gave great insight and analysis. And my broadcast partner of 17 years did a great job on the play by play. There is NO better broadcast professional in the state than Wayne. Am I biased? You bet I am.
But it's true. There is nothing that Wayne can't handle.
As for the game, I wasn't surprised that LaSalle gave UConn a hard time. The Explorers are long and athletic and extremely well coached. That makes this a pretty good win for the Huskies. They didn't play great, by any means. But, they found a way to win. And early in the season, that is important. It sets the foundation for the entire year. Kemba Walker and Jeff Adrien played great. Walker is already showing why he was so highly regarded coming out of the Bronx. And Adrien is playing like a senior leader. The Huskies need that from Jeff EVERY NIGHT. A.J.Price appeared to be playing thru a great deal of pain but gutted it out.
Sunday night will be even tougher against Miami. But that's what this tournament is all about. Playing good teams and getting better for the BIG EAST season.
(PS- log onto http://blogs.courant.com/uconn_mens_basketball/2008 for Mike Anthony's blog from the V.I. Mickey is working hard in the Islands. )
This afternoon, the UConn women are back at the XL against Rhode Island. Bob and Randy LaVigne have the call starting at 12:30. Thanks to #34 for stepping in as we load Kara to CPTV while Meghan prepares to give birth.
Then tomorrow on 1080 and wtic.com, it's the men against Miami starting with the pre game @ 5:30 pm. As soon as that game is over, it will be onto Tampa for the football teams final road game of the season against South Florida. Kevin will jump into Wayne's seat in the booth and Sean Mulcahy will be on the sidelines. It is great to have Sean with us .
As for that game, I really expect Matt Grothe to be behind center for USF. He was in a protective boot most of the week after spraining an ankle in the loss to Rutgers. The Bulls have lost three straight and are desperate for a win.Grothe is a gamer, that;s why I think he will play.
South Florida is the best team in the league at stopping the run. UConn needs another terrific game from the offensive line, tight ends and fullbacks to create the seams for Donald Brown to run thru. To me, it's a lot like last Sunday's game at the Meadowlands with UConn playing the role of the Super Bowl Champion New York Football Giants and the Bulls trying to be the big bad Baltimore Ravens.
Enjoy the sports weekend!
