THE FOOTBALL FINALE
|
It's been two days since UConn rallied from 10 down to beat Buffalo in the International Bowl in Toronto. Let's be honest kids, if UConn wasn't its own worst enemy in the first half, they might have won 50-0. They were that dominant over Buffalo. Kudos to the Connecticut defense for hanging in when the offense and special teams were having serious problems holding onto the football. Once that problem got solved, it was smooth sailing for the Huskies.
Donald Brown went out with a spectacular effort. The AllAmerican running back was magnicificent in what turned out to be his final college game. "The Donald" announced after the game that he was indeed turning pro and apologized for his misleading statements of last month. If people want to be critical of Donald for not telling the truth, that is their choice. I won't, because I know Donald Brown and if he says he said what he did so he wouldn't be a distraction, I believe him..
So now, the off season begins. A new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach must be hired and that person will be instrumental in the development of Zack Fraizer and Cody Endres as they fight for the starting quarterback job.
The International Bowl was the end of quite an era for the Huskies. For 11 fifth year seniors like DJ Hernandez, Darius Butler, Steve Brouse, Will Beatty, Julius WIlliams, Dahna Deleston, Keith Gray and others, they were part of three Bowl teams. The much maligned Tyler Lorenzen ended his career on a positive note, which is what he deserved. He is a special young man and his two years in Storrs was two years too few.
For Donald and Cody Brown, Darius Butler and Will Beatty, a chance to play for pay is in their future. I think all four can play in the NFL.
You will begin to hear new names, like wideouts Brian Parker and Gerrard Sheppard, offensive linesman Jimmy Bennett Eric Kurazcea and Adam Masters, tight end Casey Manning and John Delahunt, defensive linesman like Ted Jennings A.J. Portee and Ryan Wirth, linebackers like Sio Moore, Jerome Williams and Mark Hinkley and defensive backs such as Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Jerome Junior, Dwayne Graz, Harris Agbor and Matt Edwards. They are the Huskies of the future and between now and September 5th when the '09 season open at Ohio University, they must help replace the class of '09.
And Toronto is a terrific city and the International Bowl people are to be congratulated for running a first class event!
