MAYOR MIKE
|
I don't remember the first time I met Michael P.Peters. I'm sure it was after I came to WTIC in May of 1992. I'm sure it included us talking about being alumni of St. Augustine's School and South Catholic High School. Whenever it was, it was one of the luckiest days of my life. Because I came in contact with one of the best people I have ever met.
To know Mayor Mike was to love him. His zest for life, his love of the city and everything that goes with it were amazing. But that was Mike....amazing. From fireman to Mayor to goodwill ambassador, Mayor Mike never stopped being a positive influence on everyone he met.
I can still see Mike with Tom Ritter and others at UConn games, or running into them at the Final Fours. He loved watching the Huskies and loved following them around the country.
The news of his failing health hit everyone hard. It was tough to imagine this vibrant soul being slowed down. And that's why the funeral mass at St Augustine's , the church of Mike and my youth, was a celebration of his life... The eulogies of Rev Gary Miller, Mike's sister Geraldine and his son Chris were brilliant. The reflection by Archbisohp Mansell was poignant. And the homily by Reverand Henry Frascadore was unforgetable. Father Frascadore was our principal at South Catholic and seeing him today was a reminder of our youth and the good times that went along with it.
Mayor Mike will never be forgotten. To know him, was to love him and all that he represented. For that, I am grateful.
