NEW YORK CITY- Finally, by the time eleven teams will have already been eliminated from the 2009 Big East tournament, the UConn Huskies take the floor tonite. And really, who else did you expect to see on the other side but Syracuse. The Orange have sent the Huskies home in three of the last four tournaments and come in off a solid win against Seton Hall.
The game was tight until a couple of altercations just a few seconds apart lit theSyracuse fuse. They proceeded to go on an 18-3 run to break the game wide open led by Eric Devendorf's eight points. Devendorf is the kind of player, who is he is on your team, he like him and if he is on the other team, you dislike him...intensely. But give him credit, he can shoot the ball and last night, hit five from three point range.
Syracuse tied a Big East tournmanet single game record with 30 assists, the old mark was set by Georgetown when it crushed UConn in the 1985 quarterfinals. Johnny Flynn is lightning quick and will be a tough match up tonite. Arinze Onuaku is much healthier than he was against UConn back in early February. And last night, Kristen Ongenaet had 12 points and SEVEN assists.
One interesting dynamic is the one between Jim Boeheim and Paul Harris... Everytime I see this duo, it looks like a tension convention. And last night, Boeheim had Harris in the game in the final minutes with the walk-ons...Interesting.
As for UConn, it's time to put up. This group of Huskies is anxious to prove themselves in the post season. But it can't just be Thabeet, Price ,Adrien and Walker. Craig Austrie and Stanley Robinson must step up. Last time against Syracuse, Austrie had 10 in the game where Jerome Dyson was lost for the season. Maybe the sight of the Orange jerseys will get him cranked up.
I'll be at the Garden all day with sports updates during Total News starting @ 3, SportsTalk starting @ 6:10 and the game broadcast with Wayne beginning @ 8:45 Enjoy what should be a great day of basketball.
