Governor Signs Autism Insurance Measure

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Gov. M. Jodi Rell has signed legislation requiring group health insurance policies to cover the cost of diagnosing and treating autism in young children living in Connecticut.
Rell signed the bill on Tuesday. The law takes effect on Jan. 1.
It requires coverage of behavioral therapy for children under 16, as well as certain prescription drugs and psychiatric and psychological services. Supporters of the legislation say it's unfair for families to pay hefty insurance premiums, yet be denied coverage for autism spectrum disorders.
Parents say it can cost $2,000 to $5,000 to properly diagnose a child with autism spectrum disorders.
