HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Tougher penalties for drunken boaters involved in deadly crashes, a ban on so-called keepsake ultrasounds and a requirement that defibrillators be available in schools are among a handful of new state laws about to take effect.
Connecticut on Wednesday also becomes the 16th state to adopt the Silver Alert system to help find missing adults with dementia and other cognitive impairments. It's modeled after the Amber Alert system for missing children.
Other new laws require nursing homes to provide annual training in pain recognition and management; allow physicians to prescribe long-term antibiotics for the treatment of persistent Lyme disease without fear of sanctions from state health regulators; and raise the threshold for when small charities must be audited.
