Saint Francis Halts Elective Heart Procedures

In a three paragraph written statement, Saint Francis Hospital said it will stop giving patients elective heart procedures.

The hospital in Hartford said the state Department of Public Health recommended the suspension of the procedures.

Department spokesperson Diana Lejardi said DPH is in the midst of an investigation.  She said she could not provide information about that ongoing investigation.

The hospital said department is reviewing maintenance records of perfusion equipment in the operating room.

Perfusion is the passing of a fluid or through to to a specific part of the body, or the introduction of a drug to a specific part of the body through the bloodstream.

The hospital says operating room staff will also be given new training.

The statement did not say why the Department of Public Health wanted the procedures stopped.

The text of a written statement issued by Saint Francis Hospital:

In cooperation with the Department of Public Health, Saint Francis has voluntarily agreed to temporarily suspend elective cardiac surgery procedures.

This voluntary delay has been recommended by the DPH to provide time for a thorough review of maintenance records of perfusion equipment in the operating room, and to ensure that further education of OR personnel on policies, procedures, and emergency measures has been accomplished.

We will work with the DPH to ensure that the highest level of quality care continues to be delivered to our patients.
