Professor who Seized Lieberman's Party Dies

TRUMBULL, Conn. (AP) _ John Orman, the Fairfield University professor who seized control of the political party U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman created for the 2006 election, has died. He was 60.

The university says in a statement that Orman's untimely death Sunday night has left the campus in mourning. Orman, of Trumbull, was chairman of the Jesuit university's Department of Politics.

Lieberman created the Connecticut for Lieberman Party for his successful re-election campaign as an independent, after losing the 2006 Democratic primary to Ned Lamont.

Orman switched his party affiliation from Democrat to Connecticut for Lieberman after the senator's victory. He then voted himself chairman.

Orman had said Lieberman's creation of the party was only a ploy to secure a better position on the ballot.
