FRIDAY- Air Husky hits the wild blue yonder about 2 this afternoon as the UConn Football team head to Athens....Athens Ohio for the season opener tomorrow night with Ohio University. It's only the second time in the BCS era that UConn has opened on the road (2007,Duke) but this will be a different environment.
The Ohio Marketing staff have been promoting this game on their website since April or May. They have made a big effort to sell out Peden Stadium to its 24,000 seat capacity, including selling some tickets on line for $5. . I know, it doesn't seem like a lot but trust me, in a stadium that size, 24,000 can sound like 50,000. And the Bobcats have good history at home against BCS opponents, including a win against Pittsburgh.
Frank Solich, who doesn't do visiting radio and didn't remind anyone of Shecky Greene on the Tuesday conference call with the Connecticut media, has done a good job on the field, which is all that matters. He has two quarterbacks in Theo Scott and Boo Jackson who appear that they will both play and they do similar things. They are as deep as the Huskies at running back, led by Chris Garrett and Vince Davidson, and some real talented receivers like Taylor Price, Riley Dunlop and LaVon Brazill. They have had injuries on the offensive and defensive lines but they have a strong linebacking corp led by Noah Keller and Lee Renfro and a veteran free safety in Steven Jackson.
It will be a matter of execution and dominating both sides of the line of scrimmage. It would also behoove the Huskies to get on top early and not let the crowd get into the game.
Don't forget, coverage begins at 5:30 on Saturday with Bob Joyce and the UConn Football Magazine and when the post game ends, Bob will take your calls on Husky Talk
Enjoy the opener!
