SUNDAY: Football isnt scored like figure skating or synchronized swimming or gymnastics. There are no style points, all the points are earned on the field.
That is probably a good thing for the UConn Huskies because Saturday nights 23-16 win at Ohio wasn't the prettiest in the world. In a sense, it was a typical season opener. Good plays, and bad plays. Players who played well and players who underachieved.
The depth of the running game was impressive with both Jordan Todman and Andre Dixon running for over 100 yards, It was the first time since Donald Brown and D.J.Hernandez ran for 100 against Pittsburgh in the memorable overtime win at the Rent in 2006 that two Huskies ran for 100 in the same game. Dixon earned a game ball, although head coach Randy Edsall said he left yards "on the field"
Freshman tightend Ryan Griffen showed an ability to catch the ball going over the middle and the offensive line opened holes for the ground game and gave Zach Frazier time to throw.
Fraizer was inconsistent, too many bad throws, too many missed opened receivers. He did show a good touch on the td pass to a wide open Brad Kanuch and a pass to Isiah Moore. But Zach looked more like the qb who struggled early in camp rather than the quarterback who played and threw with confidence over the final two weeks before the opener.
Four turnovers won't be allowed starting with Carolina.
The defense played well, especially Lindsey Witten (who got the defensive game ball), Jesse Joseph, Trevardo Williams and Robet Vaughn. They could ill afford to lose Scott Lutrus for any time due to the shoulder stinger he suffered that kept him out of much of the second half. Especially with backup linebacker Sio Moore sidelined indefinitely after injuring his knee.
The preperation for North Carolina began tonite. We'll get you thru the week heading for Saturday.
