TUESDAYS WITH RANDY, CHAPTER FOUR
|
TUESDAY- Here I sit in the bowels of Gampel Pavillion where the print journalists write their stories after UConn basketball games. To my left is blogmaster extraordinaire Chip Malafronte, concocting another spicy version of Ramblings from the Runway. Sometimes we are joined by another blogger of the first degree, Des Conner from The Courant.
But today, it's just Chip and myself. and having known him for several years, it just struck me. His real first name can't be Chip. I have known two other Chips in my life, my neighbor in Old Saybrook who just passed away Ray "Chip" Kelley Jr and the fictitious star of Valley Falls High School and State University William "Chip" Hilton. So I asked Chip his real first name. Now, I know. And I'm not letting the cat out of the bag. Chip can tell you when he wants.
Ok, onto today's media availability (and lunch). The head coach touched on a variety of different subjects, as he always does. Pleased by almost everything he saw at Baylor, liked the way the offensive line has worked, pleased with the development of some of the young talent like Mike Lang, Nick Williams ,Blidi Wreh-Wilson and offensive linesman Mike Ryan and Eric Kuraczea. Randy said they have earned the right to play by the way they have practiced and they will all see more action this week against Rhode Island.
The Head Coach also talked about Cody Endres, saying he managed the game well and he seemed to have a little problem throwing the short pass, trying to lead receivers too much instead of throwing it into their body. Cody also came to the interview room and agreed with the coaches assesment.
Randy also talked about the Rams, praising several Rhode Island players and saying since UConn hasn't played a complete game yet, he isn't worried about them overlooking URI. When I talked to Twyon Martin about overlooking the Rams, he pointed out USC's loss to Washington and William and Mary beating Virginia. I also spoke to Nick Williams, who made the dramatic move from scout team impersonator of Baylor QB Robert Griffen to first team wide receiver in the space of a day. He admitted playing at the same time as fellow freshman Dwayne Difton and Mike Lang was pretty cool.
Ok, that's about it for now. Don't forget, the Coaches Show from Dave Kaplan's TV Studio in the Burton Family Football Complex comes up at 6:10 on Thursday. The players will be Robert Vaughn and Mike Hicks, who has something in common with East Lyme native John McDonald, NFL star Eddie George and TV and radio host Lou Dobbs. Tune in Thurdsday to find out what they all share
