RAM(p) IT UP
|
FRIDAY- Once upon a time, in a far different football kindgom, the teams from Connecticut and Rhode Island met every year. In fact from 1946 thru 1993 and then again from 1995 thru 2000, they DID meet every year. Some of the battles were epic. Wayne will probably wax poetic about the game at Kingston in 1985 when Tom Erhardt and the Rams stormed back from a huge defecit to win 58-42. My biggest memory is a game at Meade Stadium in 1995 when the Rams marched the length of the field on the final drive to win 24-19. Our booth was in the direct path of the assistant coaches who walked thru our booth at the end of the first half and at the end of the game. That was tense. And it was pouring rain thruout and there was a leak in our booth. Our on site engineer/producer Art Ginsberg, used duct tape to block the rain. What happened was that tape bowed and it looked like a piniata by games end.
But that rivalry was a long time ago and tomorrow, the former YanCon rivals meet at the Rent. URI is trying to be competitive in the CAA, picked last in the North Division of the league. Their coach Joe Trainer, played with our Kevin Nathan at Dickinson University. He is trying to rebuild a program that has several good players but not nearly enough to compete with UConn.
Unless UConn lets them. But the Huskies haven't allowed themselved to be lulled to sleep by FCS schools, winning all seven games against them by an AVERAGE of 39.6 points per game.
And UConn also has a bye week following the Rams and the last thing the players want is to have a tight game with URI that would leave the coaches in a somewhat angry mood for the open week.
So I expect UConn to play well . Look for a lot of running by the tag team of Dixon and Todman. It will also be interesting to watch Cody Endres work with the kiddie korps wideouts Nick Williams, Mike Lang and Dwayne Difton.
The day begins on the radio @ 530 with Ray at the Rent with Scott Gray, then Arnold Dean and Kevin have the Tailgate Show, Bob Joyce has the UConn Football Magazine, Wayne, Kevin and myself have the game broadcast, then Bob with the PostGame Show and Kev with Husky Talk. A full day of Husky Football.
And please be aware if you are going to the game, there will be additional security at the gates with the recent hightening of security concerns nationally. Spectators will be patted down at the gates and all fans are urged to leave any large bags back at the car.
Gates to the stadium open at 10:30. Enjoy the game!
