SUV DRIVER Suburban 19 MPG HWY
I have 5 kids and a SUBURBAN.. Best vehicle ever. Wake up people 19 MPG highway vs 23 for most mini vans. I don't care what others think there is just a lot of ignorance about gas mileage out there.

Parking Vioilation at a State Park and Ride Facility
Ray and Diane, I would like to inform you about my experience today at a State Park and Ride facility in Cromwell. I have used these facilities for a long time. With the cost of gas getting so high I see more and more riders using these facilities. Unfortunately, the space available at these facilities is running short. In fact they are overloaded at some locations. This morning I arrived to a full lot. There were a number of cars that were parked on the grass off the pavement. By the looks of the grass this is a common occurence at this lot. These cars were not obstructing any traffic movement and there were no signs indicating that this was a "no parking" area. So I too parked on the grass. When I arrived back at the Park and Ride later that day I found a parking violation on my windshield with the infraction "Improper Parking' and a $75 fine!!!! Needless to say I was appalled at receiving a ticket and absolutely floored by the cost of the violation. The State should be encouraging the use of these facilities and make them larger to accommodate the overflow of parkers at some facilities. I hope that you will inform/warn your listeners of what they may be in for for a seemingly small violation. I hope that you could raise this issue with the Governor when she appears on your show and get her comments.Lets make these Park and Ride lots "friendly to users". Thanks. SB162
I was disappointed in Diane this morning at the way she cut off the caller that was clearly a homeschooler when she mentioned sections of the bill. Diane said we the audience didn't know what she was talking about. Diane cut her off and we the public did not get to hear her side or be educated on the sections that homeschoolers take issue with. I'd like to hear from Rep O'Neill and a Homeschoolers Rep.. Let's be "Positive" in CT and hear what the Homeschoolers are afraid of looseing. They clearly did not get what they wanted!
03/25/2008 10:17AM
CT at it's low!
Second Highest Taxed State No Attractions Dirty/Unsafe Capital/ New Haven Unresponsive Legislature Obscene Property Taxes No Job Opportunities Nothing Attractive for young graduates, which causes many to move out of the state. Cost of doing business in this state is out of control. No Nightlife High Gas Prices Boring and unattractive state CT should take examples from states Like Rhode Island Where Providence is so much more attractive, and you can actually walk at night downtown without the fear of getting shot. CT OVERALL IS A VERY DEPRESSING AND UNAPPEALING STATE TO LIVE IN! Worse Part about it: Legislature does nothing, to help this state move forward instead we are moving backward!

SB162
Moments before Ray interviewed Sen Fleishman, there was a comment related to economics in the state of CT to the effect that CT schools need to graduate more kids with better test scores. Odd, then that homechoolers, whose kids tend to do quite well in all walks of life, are once again under attack from the State Brd of Ed. So, I am wondering how it came to be that Ray interviewed Sen Fleishman this morning concerning SB162, given that Rep O'Neill was the original sponsor of the legislation. He worked closely with homeschoolers, and having the same access to legislative attorneys that Sens Fleishman and Gaffey do, he personally has stated that the current language should NOT be supported. It is important to understand that members of the Education Committee expressed concern over the revised language just prior to the vote, as they themselves had never seen it before that day. Sen Gaffey stated (on film) that Rep O"Neill was "fine" with the new language. Gaffey's colleagues voted "yes" for this reason and several stated this. Rep O'Neill was far from "fine" with the language, as he was not even aware of it. He is now actively trying to restore the original language. If, as Fleishman asserts, the revised language is the same, then why did Gaffey need to blindside his colleagues in order to pass it? There is probably no group of citizens in CT who understand the legislative process better than homeschoolers and it is insulting to have Fleishman imply that we simply do not understand "the way things work". I think he fears we understand far too well.

Red Sox Boycot
What a joke. Most of those guys do not want to make trip to Japan so threat of boycot is silly. If those over paid primadonas were really concerned about coaches they would have offered up some of thier stipend. Its not like they can't afford it. The A's were the classy bunch.

W Hartford Taxes
Like all towns in CT most of the tax dollars pay for salaries and benefits of employees. I would propose that Education be totally the responsibility of the state and that that the chain of command so to speak be changed so that the cost of overseeing education is reduced further the benefit plans for education be standardized and brought under the states plan and consideration be given to having the spouse of the covered educator pay more of the tab for their coverage. The only way to bring cost down in this state is to give up on the idea of home rule it doesn't make sense to have 169 government structures.
03/14/2008 8:50AM
W Hartford Taxes
Please note that the proposed West Hartford budget represents an increase of 6.94% but the percentage of income from other sources is going down so property taxes are going up by 7.9%, not 7%

Declawing
Many people are unaware of the fact you are removing the bones of the feet as well as the nerves, etc. Vets don't often tell their clients what the surgical complications are, because of the money factor. Did the vet on the radio just now explain what happens -- what declawing really is?! That is why we need the government to regulate such an invasive procedure.Over 50% of declawed cats have post-surgical complications including prolonged lameness, in addition to developing an aversion to using their litter box or biting because they have no defense. The vets don't often tell their clients this because declawing is a money maker. Some responsible vets do tell their clients, and many choose not to declaw once they find out. Vets also don't always counsel their clients on things like scratching posts, soft paws, and other nonsurgical methods for keeping the cats away from the furniture. Again, some vets are responsible, but others are not. Same as for human doctors.
03/06/2008 9:38AM
Declawing
Some veterinarians gloss over the actual surgical procedure, because, frankly, it is a moneymaker. It is illegal in many other countries across the world. The bottom line is that pet ownership is a choice. If you prefer your furniture over your cat, you should not have a cat. Would you declaw or detooth a dog for ruining your furniture?
03/06/2008 9:30AM
declawed cats
Coyotes don't care, claws or no claws, they eat both easily
03/06/2008 9:26AM
declawing cats
I am the owner of 2 happy, healthy indoor declawed cats. My choice. What is wrong with our lawmakers these days? Don't they have more important things to do then try to legislate what we can do with our pets. Obviously, no one should be allowed to be cruel, but declawing, if done properly, is not cruel. Why don't our lawmakers spend their time on bills for helping the homeless, or the poor or on better healthcare etc. Spending time on a bill like this is indefensible. As a taxpayer, I am outraged.

Black Troopers
You have got to be kidding me. How ridiculous to suggest that we (state taxpayers) should accept being "protected and served" by anything but the best of the best. The Black State Troopers Assoc. has been complaining and suing State Police management for as long as I can remember (and I worked there 20 yrs ago). So they are in effect saying that the present Commissioner, Comm. Forst, Comm Sullivan, Comm Cioffi, etc, etc. have all been racially biased against blacks... oh please...! And now John Williams suggests we accept and promote those who did good enough rather than those who excelled! Can you imagine United Technologies or Travelers or some other private company hiring people that way?? Things like this are why state government is in such trouble!!!
03/03/2008 9:41AM
Black Troopers
This is crazy! Instead of FORCING the State to accept candidates with a score that's lower than another candidate just because of their skin color or their gender (sounds like reverse discrimination to me)maybe someone can put together a program to help these candidates prepare for the test to get a better grade?!? This Black Trooper Association is actually suppressing their own people and other minorities by saying that minorities could never rise above and score high on the test so we need to dumb down the tests. Nobody will ever try harder if its just handed to them!

IRS v. UCC
Odd that the IRS never investigates the evangelical, fundamentalist churches even when said churches register voters in the vestibule and their preachers endorse ultra right candidates from the pulpit. Is this a scheme to eliminate one of the most accepting and affirming of all Protestant faiths?

Teen Drivers
I am only in favor of enforcable laws, not PC laws. If there was a law limiting horse power to 16-18 year olds, police could easily identify vehicels that are being driven that are not age/experience appropriate

Teen Drivers!!!
A couple of points I would like to make, 1, When my son received his second speeding ticket, his driving PRIVILEGE was taken away by us, his parents. He will get it back when he completes hi drivers retraining class, (at the earliest). 2, I think there should be a sign on cars stating they are teen drivers placed in a place visible outside the car. 3, I think the police officer should be allowed to take the license away at the time he gave the first ticket. Yes it would be a hardship, but maybe, the teen would take this more seriously. Robin, the caller from this morning.

Improving Education
When ever someone on your radio station is interviewing someone about making improvements to our K-12 public education system, I have never heard the obvious question being asked "Why not lengthen the school year"? The school year of 180 days is long over due to increase, I know there is the teachers union to deal with, but the children in the USA spend the least amount of time in school as compared to other countries (Japan, Germany, China) and add to that all of the half days we have here in the Northeast, which boils down to a waste of a school day anyway (two late openings should equal 1 school day). If you consider that all these kids involved in sports, when they our their coach want them to improve, what do they do? They practice longer...it's common sense, and is what all our compition is doing around the world. 180 days was OK back when I went to school in the 60's, but the education department need to realize that there is a lot of competion out there

Choate
The senior class of Rosemary Choate is to be commended for its stand on refusing to have Karl Rove as its graduation speaker. This man is nothing more than a political opporitive whose job was to get certain individuals elected to public office. He hasdone nothing to benefit nor enhance mankind. To the contrary, his tactics were instrumental in dividing this country between us and them.

Mitt Romney
Mitt really understands the plight of the middle class. He said he sees the stock market plunge as a "buying opportunity". I don't know about you, but with my 401K worth several thousands less than last month, college tuition to pay, electric, oil bills, and insurance I sure don't have anything left for Mitt's "buying opportunities". And we thought John Kerry was a patrician!

Rowland
Jarjura's appointment of Rowland is completely outrageous. It puts Rowland into exactly the same situation that landed him in jail. And what about other qualified candidates who are frozen out of the running? This decision is cronyism at its worst.
01/24/2008 9:06AM
Rowland
I have no problem with giving him another chance. My problem is more with his purported high salarey at the expense of city workers who have kept the city going with low pay, poor working conditions, and downsizing. Taxpayers money is critical to keeping these folks on the job.
01/23/2008 4:19PM
Rowland
Rowland had his chance to shine and took advantage of it. If this position is really needed in these times of exhorbitant real estate taxes in Waterbury, it should go to someone bright and energetic who is not a felon. What is the Mayor Jarjura thinking? You are going to put a man who promulgated all kinds of economic graft in government right back in the hen house! Rowland does not deserve the job. Let him start over at Aetna as a clerk.
01/23/2008 9:00AM
Rowland
Waterbury tax payers are going to foot part of the bill for the salary of this man who was largely responsible for cutting personnel, salaries and benefits for those same firefighters who put their lives on the line and heroically saved the lives of 17 people Monday night, in icey weather. These men are true heroes and city money that should be going to them is going to this new position, sounds like it was created specifically for Rowland. What is wrong here? Corruption rules I guess.
01/22/2008 8:25AM
Teen Driving
It seems to me that the common denominator in this problem is the types of cars that are involved in these accidents. Maybe kids under 18 should not be allowed to drive certain cars.

Puppies
Last summer, Paris Hilton brought home a new Chihuahua and Britney Spears a Yorkie- both purchased from Pets of Bel Air, L.A.%u2019s pet boutique to the stars. At Pets of Bel Air, staff members perfume and coif their tiny puppies for sale, creating an illusion of perfection. The HSUS%u2019s undercover investigation relealed that many of the puppies sold at Pets of Bel Air come from puppy mills in the Midwest including Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Hundreds of breeding dogs living in barren wire cages where they are treated like production machines. Some had untreated injuries, were pacing frantically, and were housed in overcrowded cages that reeked of urine. As we celebrate compassion this holiday season, many people will unwittingly support this cruel and inhumane industry when they purchase a puppy from a pet store. Please, if you are thinking of a pet for a gift-adopt one at your local shelter. Ingrediants & Taxes
I was just reading the ingrediants for a snack at lunch and realized how easy it is to see exactly what I was eating. The daily taxes on items you purchase regularly however are not posted so prominently. Could someone please make me a law that mandates the display of these taxes(or formulas) on the items I purchase? I wonder what the daily effect of seeing this would have on us? Also, if you could be so kind as to itemize to a reasonable degree of accuracy my town taxes, and send me the short report- quarterly?

"Chronic Lyme Disease" and Atty. Blumenthal
First, I apologize for being a stuttering caller today; I was just getting out of my car to meet my wife when my call went on the air. The vast majority of physicians, including all of the infectious disease specialists I know, do NOT believe that "Chronic Lyme Disease" is a true clinical entity. As a primary care physician, I have met patients who have seen "Chronic Lyme Disease specialists," all of whom say the patient needs to be on intravenous antibiotics for years. As these physicians are able to charge insurance companies every time they administer intravenous antibiotics (usually once a week if not more), you can see the potential windfall those doctors can receive. I'm particularly annoyed about Atty. Blumenthal going on your 50,000 watt flamethrower hinting that physicians who are opposing this unproven "treatment" are somehow receiving money on the side to continue this fight. How can Atty. Blumenthal hint about "interesting" conflicts of interest, yet make NO clear allegation? If he cannot talk about it because the legal process is not completed, then should he NOT talk about it on the radio?? Dr. Wayne

Gasoline prices
You may not remember the caller this past summer who called in to complain about gasoline prices. He was a home improvement/contrator who complained that gas prices were cutting into his profits. As I listened to you sharing his pain I wondered if you have ever gone to Dunkin Donuts at about 7:00 AM on a weekday. If not, go to the one (actually any one will do) in East Hampton. Count the number of these F 250 or F 350 type pick ups that are running while the driver is in getting donuts and coffee. I guarantee there will be at least four or five. All of the occupants in the donut shop ordering or talking to each other. If one should call in the future, ask them the if they ever do this. Ask them if they drive faster than the speed limit (slower driving results in gas efficiency),if they ever sit in line in a drive up window at a fast food restuarant, or if they ever accellerate quickly from a stop. Ask if they ever leave their truck running when not in it. If the caller denies any of this, they are very likely being untruthful. Obviously they are not the only ones doing any of this. If a driver does not do any of this they are safing up to 30% on gas costs. Unfortunately, many people do this and complain about other such as George Bush, Big Oil, oil producing countries, and just about everyone else but themselves. They need to look in the mirror to see who is the one who has to change behviors to safe on gas. Thank you.

Avon Mountain - best solution
There is no easy solution to the problem of Avon Mountain. Banning trucks from Avon Mountain will only cause major problems on other roadways. A Tunnel - yeah right. And there's nowhere to build an inclned emergency lane to stop runaway trucks without putting up one hell of a fight with local residents. No, the best solution (which has it's own problems, but less than that of other "solutions") is to is eliminate the grade as much as possible by 1)dig the road deeper at it's highest points, 2) widen the road and 3)stricter enforcement of speed limits with the use of of several cameras. Top Vegetarian-friendly ballpark
Diane's comments this morning about vegan-dogs at the ballpark were intersting. "There's no dog in the dog" about a "real" hotdog vs. a vegan hotdog followed by "but we don't want to know whats in them (real hotdogs). When you look at the human obesity, the pollution from factory-farmed animals, the overwhelming evidence that eating animals is not necessary nor necessarily healthy and the cruelty that exists in this business, its something that I'd like to hear a thinking radio station to address. There are people who believe that 100 years from now our treatment of animals will be looked upon as equal to our horror of the treatment of slaves from centuries past. Vegetarianism could cure so many of our problems from the state of our environment - water and air pollution - to our health - obesity, allergies, cholesterol, etc - to the rights of living beings - raised and killed under unnatural circumstances and animal testing for human products that can be painful, toxic and cruel. Diane, with all of the talk about your dog - by the way, have you checked to see whats really in your dog food - and in light of criminals like Michael Vick, please take a closer look at this issue for the sake of all of us.

Say No to Horse Drawn Carriages
People may be missing the real issue of using horses to pull tourists in Wethersfield. It is time that we as a society change how we think of animals. The issue here is not whether the horses will be treated well or if they will be overworked. The point is that animals should not be exploited for our economic gain or for the human agenda. Animals have their own agenda and they should be left free of our interference as much as possible. The best thing for horses and all other domestic animals would be if we stopped breeding them right now.

Buckland road construction
Perhaps you could discuss the construction workmanship being done on this project. This past Friday evening our car incurred damage (transaxle pan) due to the highly exposed manholes on this road. Was it necessary to strip the pavement to such a depth for replacement? These manholes are not easily visible at night. Some were painted but most had paint worn away. With many cars now designed with low profile bodies or using low profile tires, I wonder how many other cars have gotten damaged. Try pulling out of some of the business lots along this road. You may find more than the dust being removed from the bottom of your car.

Mortgage Meltdown
It's quite interesting hoe this is already becoming a massive "blame game". We haven't even scene the worst and everyone has an opinion as to hwo it is someone else's fault. For example Congressman Murphy feels we need or neede more disclosure. Then goes on to tell us that there is too much confud=sing paperwork. Not to pick on him but it is the role of the real estate attorney or closing agent to explain the salient points ( interest rate, terms of adjustment, prepayment penalty etc.) to the borrower. That is regardless of whether the attorney represents the borrower or the lender. I assume Mr. Murphy was doing so as a real estate attorney?

Question: does this "non tax" apply to catalog sales (such as LLBeans and Orvis)that have a retail store, therefore taxed for catalog sales, in CT? IE during this week, would orders to such companies be non-taxable?

Greatest concern ...The lack of concern by politicians for the welfare of this country and its inhabitants. 2nd greatest ...lack of concern by the media for morality in broadcasts that our children can see. 3rd concern...where will all the women's tatoos end up in 50 years?

death penalty
Please ask you upcoming morning guest, how as our society is breaking down, he can claim an upper moral authority? The tragity in Cheshire is probably the worst we have heard of in decades, but is certainly an indication of where we are going as a world wide society. Maybe rather than worrying about being polically correct we might concern ourselves with a justice system rather than a leegal system As civilazation began to understand the necessity of laws Hanurabi codified law which began the path to a society of laws. In this case we should use his codes of JUSTICE to deal with these two men

Birthday announcements
It's nice to hear the Birth dates of famous people. But it appears when Ray and Diane are not impressed with certain people we as listeners do not get to hear them, and several times Ray or Diane talk over each other and it's difficult to understand what they are saying and most times they leave off the persons Birth date. It would be nice if they stop this behaver. Bob Montenieri

Marinol is not marijuana
THC, marijuana's main psychoactive ingredient, is sold in pill form as the prescription drug Marinol. However, marijuana contains at least 60 active cannabinoids in addition to THC. Many of these compounds are believed to interact synergistically to produce therapeutic effects that THC alone does not. And the last thing that patients want is a pill when they are already nauseated or are in the act of throwing up. Marinol simply is not an effective replacement for vaporized or smoked marijuana.
